Living in the Netherlands on a residence permit
If a person is not a national of an EU country, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland, they can live in the Netherlands provided they meet certain conditions. And they need to hold a residence permit.
Moving to the Netherlands to live and/or work
If a person is not a national of:
- a European Union (EU) country
- Liechtenstein
- Norway
- Iceland
- Switzerland
they must have a reason to live in the Netherlands, such as work or to join a partner.
Staying in the Netherlands for a short period of time
If a person is coming to the Netherlands for no more than 90 days, they may need a short-stay Schengen visa.
Staying in the Netherlands for a long period of time
If a person is coming to the Netherlands for more than 90 days, they will need a residence permit.
To get their residence permit, a person may first need an authorisation for temporary stay (MVV) in order to enter the country.
